What is Steeking?
In knitting, steeking is a shortcut used to knit garments such as sweaters in the round without interruption for openings or sleeves until the end. After completing a tube, a straight line is cut along the center of a column of stitches, in order to make room for an opening or place to attach another piece.
In this one day workshop Fiona will teach you how to knit Fair Isle in the round with a yarn in each hand and including a ‘steek’ area in the knitting. Once the mug hug is knitted Fiona will show you how to work a crochet steek to stabilise the knitted fabric before cutting the knitting open to make a flat piece of knitting. She will then show you how to pick up stitches for the edging and finish the steek area on the wrong side.

What to bring
+ DK weight yarn in 2 contrasting colours, a dark and a light. The technique is easier to work if you use a slightly ‘sticky/hairy’ double knit yarn rather than a Superwash treated yarn.
+ 3.75mm and 4.5mm needles, either sets of dpns, or 2 circulars or 1 long circular (preferably 100cm).
+ 3.25mm or 3.75mm crochet hook
+ Sharp scissors, tapestry needle, pen or pencil

Each workshop will be 5 hours long and have space for 10 attendees as well as the instructor and shop owner. An email will be sent out several days before with instructions on where to park and how to find us.
