The Inspiration
The Blossom Blanket CAL was inspired by spring, Claire’s favourite season, and her love of gardening. She adores seeing blossom appear on the trees after the long winter months as a signifier of the growth and the sunshine to come.
“Fruit tree blossoms are some of my favourite florals to see at this time of year, but I also love to see the spring bulbs, so have also been inspired by hyacinths and grape hyacinths, whose three sculptural petals gave me the perfect excuse to use my favourite popcorn stitches! Finally, the hawthorn had such an important place in the British countryside. It’s blossom is a symbol of fertility and used as a marker of when spring finally edges over into summer, so it feels like a fitting inspiration for a blossom blanket.”
The soft pastel shades of the blanket are inspired by all of the gorgeous spring blooms, bulbs and more that are seen from early spring and signify the beginning of the blousy abundance and beauty of the season. As a finishing flourish, Claire reflected some of the stitches and shapes from the motifs into a pretty edging to draw the whole piece together.
